One difficulty encountered at the institution was that those sent to Narco often resisted treatment and often appeared resentful of the doctors charged with trying to help. Recalls former patient John Stallone: “You met with a doctor, and he asked you what some of your problems were and how you felt. Basic Freudian questions, which you always knew how to answer because you knew what they wanted to hear. It was that bullshit doctor-patient thing.” Photo by Bill Strode, 1966.

The institution held that group psychotherapy was more suitable than individual therapy for patients with “sociopathic” disturbances. The original caption in Louisville’s Courier-Journal reads: “Group psychotherapy session yields insights on addiction. Social worker Henry James (white coat) and psychologist Bob Smith (khakis) listen as a patient talks.” July 24, 1966.
